-
- You say that we can't get a good PC system for 1/4th the price of an
- A4000T? Well, your right. but I bet that we can get one for under a
- 1/3rd of the price. Figuring that the cost of an A4000T in North America
- is at least $3000, let build ourselves a PC!
-
-
- First off, we'll need the innards. Lets get a mid-range system with about
- 8MB of mem...
-
- $209 Biostar 486/PCI MB - 3 PCI/4ISA slots
- 4-72 pin sockets
- 256KB Lv 2 cache (512K max)
- Built in I/O - EIDE, Floppy, 2 ser, par, game
- with AMD 5x86/133 CPU (as fast as a P-75)
-
- $139 8MB 70ns 72-pin SIMM
-
- $135 PCI Diamond Stealth 2Mb DRAM video card
-
- $79 SoundBlaster 16
-
- $199 Fujitsu M1614T - 1090MB capacity
- 4500 RPM spindal speed
- 11ms access time
- 3 year manufactureer's warrenty
- (E)IDE interface
-
- $99 Mitsumi CRMC-FX400 - 4x Speed CDROM drive
- 128KB cache
- 230ms access time
- (E)IDE interface
-
- $25 Sony 1.44MB Floppy
-
- -----------
- $885 Totall for innards
-
-
- $15 101 key generic keyboard
-
- $8 3 button generic mouse
-
- $69 Full Tower Case - 10 Bays
- 250W 120 VAC power supply
-
- ------------
-
- $977 Total cost of system
-
- Not a bad little system if you ask me. I just got an AMD 5x86/133 to
- replace my 486/33 and it hauls along quite well. Add a generic 14" .28dp
- monitor for about $240 and you have yourself a complete system that will
- put a "Walker" to shame. And neither the "Walker" nor the A4000T include
- a monitor in their price, and because AGA uses software mode promotion,
- you need an expensive (and shitty) monitor that drops down to 14KHz.
- Whats worse is that few of these monitors can sync to over 35KHz, yet even
- a generic SVGA 14" monitor can reach at least 60KHz.
-
-
-
- <BEGIN line by line crushing of statements>
-
- : The "Walker" is an update to the A1200, according to Petro T.,
- : and incorporates several major improvements. Like the ability to add
- : cards (and card slots).
-
- This new "feature" has been a weakness to low end Amigas for years. Its
- not a feature, its giving the "Walker" something that other platforms have
- had as something standard for years. BTW, you have been able to add cards
- to the A1200 for some time... either PCMCIA cards, or by shelling out $300
- you could get one of those "hack-in-a-box" cases that come a shitload-o-
- slots.
-
- All I see when I look at the "Walker" is technology that was developed
- over 6 years ago with a few off the shelf add-ons. Big whoop. What is
- sad is that Escom/Amiga Tech thinks that it will sell for $1000US. That
- is just really sad and is a waste of time/effort/money. If they wanted to
- get a quick 030 machine out, they should of just dropped an 030 on the
- A1200 MB (which is what it was originally designed to take), replace the
- IDE interface with an EIDE one, and slap it in some generic case. Lets
- move on to PPC machines already.
-
-
- : If the two in the basic unit are not enough, add more. And more. You
- : can expand the "Walker" beyond the capacity of an A4000T!
-
- So you basically have to pay for all of the basic crap and shell out more
- to get the stuff you want. This is why its always costs more in the long
- run to upgrade Amigas. And to expand the "Walker" beyond, you might as
- well sighn away your first born because it ain't gonna be cheap.
-
-
- : The 68EC030 (680EC30?) @ 40MHz may not be the most powerful of
- : CPUs, but it is a >4X improvement on the standard A1200.
-
- What you are saying is basically "Instead of being shot at with an
- automatic rifle, I'm just gonna get shot at with a pistol." Big
- improvment. The 68EC020/14 was a cripplingly slow CPU even back when the
- A1200 first came out. The 68EC030/40 is the same today - it will not even
- give you the level of performance that you could get with a 486DX/25. At
- least the 486DX has an MMU and FPU!
-
-
- : It's faster than a standard A3000.
-
- Not saying much since the A3000 has been out over what, over 6 years now?
-
-
- : It should compare well with most '486-powered PCs running Windows - very
- : well if they are "running" WinNT or Win'95.
-
- I own both an A3000, an A4000, and now a 5x86/133 (used to have a 486/33).
- I will tell you right now that my 486/33 ran a lot of stuff just as well
- as my A4000/030, and the grfx were a hell of a lot faster than AGA. You
- want to see smooth scrolling animations on a PC? Just find a program that
- uses the VBlank. For day to day applications, a good PC grfx card kicks
- ass to AGA in a heartbeat.
-
- Anyways, an EC030/40 will not compare well to a 486 powered PC. "very
- well if they are running WinNT"? Have you even SEEN WindowsNT before? It
- runs 32-bit applications much better than Windows3.11. This is 1996 -
- most applications that were made last or this year are 32-bit. If you are
- still runninng apps from 1993, you should probably upgrade anyways.
-
-
- : I'll miss my clean laced screen and SCSI drive when I upgrade
- : from my A3k to a "Walker", but right now I miss the new OS, the 4x
- : CD-ROM, the AGA, the hi-speed serial port, etc. I'm upgrading.
-
- Go out and buy a used C=3640, a Spectrum, and a SCSI Quad Speed CDROM
- drive (in an external case). Should run you about $550 but you will have
- a system that is at LEAST 30% faster than an EC030/40, has an FPU and an
- MMU, and can do cirlces around AGA graphic wise.
-
- If you want to play games, get a PC. There is no Amiga game market
- anymore.
-
- The only thing that could save the Amiga is to put out a low cost killer
- mid-range machine ('round $1500) with an OS that uses your grfx chips to
- the Max and has a fast API for all programs to use. Windows95 is bulky,
- but hell, it runs fine on a fast 486 if you have the mem and a video card
- with a good video driver (one of the biggest reasons Windows has always
- sucked for people is because their drivers sucked). If Escom dosn't want
- to make it (and just focus on Europe) then fine. Just make the OS
- interfaces and make sure that software programmers don't bypass them, and
- then just let US based clone makers run free (like Radius or Power
- Computing).
